AWARDS PRESENTED BY ISU AGRICULTURE HONOR SOCIETY

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University College of Agriculture faculty and students were among those who won top honors from the Iowa Chapter of Gamma Sigma Delta, the Honor Society of Agriculture, on April 9.

Gerald Klonglan received the Distinguished Service to Agriculture Award, which is the highest award the society bestows. Klonglan has served ISU as a rural sociology faculty member since 1963; chair of the department of sociology and anthropology from 1976 to 1990; assistant director of the Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station since 1990 and associate dean for the College of Agriculture since 1995. He has been a leader in developing the college's diversity programs and establishing partnerships with the nation's historically black land-grant universities and tribal colleges.

Two undergraduate students received recognition for their academic achievements. The Outstanding Sophomore Award was given to Ely Grote of Bayard, who is majoring in agricultural systems technology. Barry Bradford of Guthrie Center, majoring in animal science and agricultural biochemistry, was awarded the Outstanding Senior Award.

Three Mission Awards were presented, recognizing outstanding faculty members in teaching, research and extension. Marshall Jurgens, professor of animal science, received the Teaching Award. The Research Award went to Stephen Ford, professor of animal science. Keith Whigham, professor of agronomy received the Extension Award.

New chapter officers for the 2001-2002 year were installed. Pam White, professor of food science and human nutrition, will serve as the next president. Vice president will be Brad Skaar, professor of animal science. William Edwards, professor of ag economics, will be secretary/treasurer. 

Gamma Sigma Delta encourages excellence in the practice of agriculture and high standards of scholarship in agricultural science and education.
