FOUR STUDENTS IN NEW GRADUATE PROGRAM RECEIVE ASSISTANTSHIPS
AMES, Iowa -- The first 18 students to enroll in a new Iowa State University graduate program in sustainable agriculture are in classrooms this fall. Four of them were formally recognized Oct. 8 for the assistantships they've been awarded.
Xiaofan Niu of Shenyang, China, was designated the Leopold Scholar, having received her assistantship from the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture. Annette Bitto of Elberta, Ala., was designated the Wallace Scholar, receiving her assistantship from the Wallace Chair for Sustainable Agriculture.
Tom Matthews of Mora, N.M., and Jennifer Bousselot of Dewitt, Iowa, both received assistantships from the ISU College of Agriculture. Each of the four assistantships provides $7,500 per year for two years.
The graduate program in sustainable agriculture was approved by the Iowa Board of Regents in July 2000. It offers both master's and doctorate degrees. Ten departments are involved, including agricultural and biosystems engineering, agricultural education and studies, agronomy, animal science, anthropology, entomology, forestry, horticulture, plant pathology and sociology.
Ricardo Salvador, agronomy, is the director of the program.
