AMES, Iowa -- Steven Fales, head of Pennsylvania State University's Department of Agronomy will become the head of Iowa State University's agronomy department on June 1.

Fales' areas of expertise include forage crops and grazing systems. He has been department head at Penn State since 1995.

Fales is an alumnus of the University of Rhode Island (bachelor's and master's) and Purdue University (Ph.D.) Last year he was named a fellow of the Crop Science Society of America.

"Dr. Fales has a superior record of leadership and service in all of our missions -- teaching, research and outreach. He is the kind of leader we sought for our agronomy department, which has unique opportunities because of receiving the largest gift in Iowa State's history," said Richard Ross, dean of the College of Agriculture.

The gift was an $80-million endowment, received from an anonymous donor in 1999.

Fales succeeds Tom Loynachan, who has served as interim department head since the departure of Ron Cantrell. Cantrell left in August 1998 to become director general of the International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines.
