1999 IOWA MASTER CORN AND SOYBEAN GROWERS RECEIVE AWARDS
AMES, Iowa -- State and district winners in the 1999 Iowa Master Corn and Soybean Growers' Contests were honored at an awards ceremony on Thursday, Feb. 3.
State awards were presented for highest yields in five corn and three soybean divisions. District awards were presented for first and second in yields and for highest residue management yield.
There were 137 corn contests and 126 soybean contests sponsored locally around Iowa in 1999. A total of 2,343 entries were received in the corn contest with 1,524 submitting qualified harvests. In the soybean contest there were 1,625 entries with 1,016 qualified harvests.
The contests are coordinated by the Iowa Crop Improvement Association (ICIA), a nonprofit organization offering quality, unbiased services to farmers, seed companies and others for the betterment of Iowa agriculture. The first corn contest was held in 1938; the soybean contest started in 1941.
STATE AWARD WINNERS
Champion Non-irrigated Corn Grower --Francis Childs of Manchester won for the sixth year in a row with the highest corn yield ever achieved in the contest -- 393.74 bushels per acre. He received The Des Moines Register plaque. The division had 1,510 entries, including conservation tillage, no-till and contour entries, for an average yield of 190.49 bushels per acre.
Champion Conservation Tillage Corn Grower -- Bruce and Elmer Zomermaand of Sioux Center received a plaque from the Iowa Corn Promotion Board for their yield of 221.73 bushels per acre. There were 78 entries competing, with an average yield of 193.26 bushels per acre.
Champion No-Till Corn Grower -- Bernard Welsh of Waukon had a winning yield of 239.95 bushels per acre. He received a plaque from Iowa Farmer Today. The division had 158 entries with an average yield of 187.14 bushels per acre.
Champion Contour Corn Grower -- Matt Schuiteman of Sioux Center had a winning yield of 249.01 bushels per acre, the highest ever achieved in the contour division. He received a plaque from the Division of Soil Conservation, Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship. The division had 74 entries with an average yield of 195.90 bushels per acre.
Champion Irrigated Corn Grower --John Joffer of Inwood had a winning yield of 242.84 bushels per acre. He received a plaque from the Iowa Crop Improvement Association. The division's 14 entries had an average yield of 210.64 bushels per acre.
Champion Soybean Grower -- Wayne Schulte of Dorchester had a winning yield of 90.16 bushels per acre, the highest ever achieved in the contest. He received the John Sand plaque. The division had 1,016 entries, including conservation tillage and no-till entries, for an average yield of 59.71 bushels per acre.
Champion Conservation Tillage Soybean Grower -- Wayne Schulte of Dorchester won with a yield of 90.16 bushels per acre, the highest ever achieved in the conservation tillage division. He received a plaque from the Iowa Soybean Association and the Iowa Soybean Promotion Board. There were 65 entries with an average yield of 61.79 bushels per acre.
Champion No-Till Soybean Grower -- Keith Hora of Riverside won with a yield of 84.30 bushels per acre, the highest ever achieved in the no-till division. He received a plaque from the Iowa Soybean Association and the Iowa Soybean Promotion Board. The division had 143 entries with an average yield of 59.16 bushels per acre.
DISTRICT AWARD WINNERS
Awards were presented to corn and soybean yield winners in 12 districts. First-place winners received a plaque and $100. Second-place winners received a plaque and $50. Entries with the highest yield in conservation tillage or no-till received a plaque as the residue management division winner (listed as "Res" below).
