2000 PIERRE LECTURE IN SOIL SCIENCE NOV. 1 AT IOWA STATE

AMES, Iowa -- An internationally recognized soil scientist with ties to Iowa State University will return to campus on Nov. 1 to speak about the environmental impacts of European agriculture.

The 2000 Pierre Lecture in the Soil Science will be given by Rienk van der Ploeg of the University of Hannover in Germany. His topic will be "Environmental Impacts of Agricultural Land Use Changes in Central Europe Since World War II." The lecture will be held at 4:10 p.m., Nov. 1, in Room 2050 in Agronomy Hall.

Van der Ploeg is professor of soil science at the Institute of Soil Science at the University of Hannover. His research interests are in environmental soil physics. He also studies the history of soil science. He was educated both in Europe and in the United States. He has a master's degree (1970) and doctorate (1972) in soil physics from Iowa State.

The Pierre Lecture Series is named in memory of William H. Pierre, who was chair of ISU's agronomy department from 1938 to 1964. Van der Ploeg's lecture will be the 14th in the series.
