NEW DIRECTOR NAMED FOR IOWA PORK INDUSTRY CENTER AT ISU
AMES -- John Mabry, a University of Georgia animal scientist, has been named the new director of the Iowa Pork Industry Center at Iowa State University.
Mabry will begin his new duties on April 1. Since 1979 he has been a professor in the animal and dairy science department at the University of Georgia. Prior to that position, he was a faculty member at the University of Wisconsin at River Falls.
Mabry's research and extension activities in Georgia have focused on designing and implementing systems to help swine producers maximize their herds' genetic progress and profitability. His work has included extensive use of computerized data management systems for swine production.
Mabry earned his master's degree and Ph.D. from Iowa State. He received his bachelor's degree from Oklahoma State University.
Mabry will be the Iowa Pork Industry Center's second director. The first director was ISU animal scientist Lauren Christian, who died in November 1998. The center's associate director, James McKean, has been serving as interim director. McKean is a professor in veterinary medicine extension. James Kliebenstein, an economics professor, has served as the center's interim associate director.
Established in 1994, the Iowa Pork Industry Center conducts programs to promote efficient pork production technologies in Iowa, maintain Iowa's pork industry leadership and strengthen rural development. The center is a coordinated effort of faculty and staff in the College of Agriculture, the College of Veterinary Medicine and ISU Extension.
