IOWA-PRODUCED FOOD TO BE FEATURED AT IOWA STATE'S FIRST FOOTBALL GAME

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa-produced commodities and foods will help kick off the Iowa State University Cyclones' football season Sept. 2.

The Iowa Commodity Classic and Taste of Iowa will feature foods for football fans who come to see the Cyclones take on the Ohio University Bobcats. Jack Trice Stadium gates open at 9:30 a.m. with kick-off at 11:30 a.m.

The Iowa Cattlemen's Association, Iowa Beef Industry Council, Iowa Pork Producers, Iowa Turkey Federation, Iowa Egg Council and the Midwest Dairy Association will be among the commodity groups represented. They will be selling steak sandwiches, pork chops on a stick, turkey tenderloin sandwiches, frozen custard and milk prior to and during the game. The Iowa Corn Growers Association and Iowa Soybean Association will display foods made from their respective commodities.

Commercial food companies also will be promoting their products in conjunction with the Iowa Department of Economic Development's (IDED) Taste of Iowa promotion. Staff from the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship and IDED will provide information about the state's food industry.

Fans can sign up for a drawing for a three-minute shopping spree for products containing corn or soybeans. That's most products on the shelves, according to the drawing sponsors, the Iowa corn and soybean associations. Two winners will be announced, one each after the first and third quarters of the football game. Rules for the drawing are available on the event's Web site.

Iowa State's College of Agriculture, Department of Athletics and the IDED have teamed up to sponsor the event. The Iowa State -- Ohio University football game is the official kick off of the all-university celebration "Strengthening Families to become the best," sponsored by the College of Family and Consumer Sciences.
