AWARDS PRESENTED BY ISU AGRICULTURE HONOR SOCIETY

AMES, Iowa -- Awards were presented April 17 to Iowa State University College of Agriculture faculty members and others by the Iowa Chapter of the Honor Society of Agriculture, known as Gamma Sigma Delta.

Roger Bruene received the Distinguished Service to Agriculture award. Bruene is a 1956 graduate of ISU. He was an extension youth assistant in Black Hawk County for four years before returning to ISU as curriculum adviser in the farm operations program. Bruene was named director of the ISU College of Agriculture's career services office in 1975. He remained in that position until his retirement two years ago. More than 12,000 students graduated from the college during Bruene's tenure in the career services office.

Three Mission Awards were presented. The Research Award went to Jerry Young, professor of animal science. John Schafer, professor of agronomy, received the Teaching Award. The Extension Award went to Robert Jolly, professor of economics.

The honor society also recognized two outstanding undergraduates in the College of Agriculture. Derek Wild of New Albin, majoring in agricultural systems technology, received the Sophomore Scholarship Award of Merit. Rebecca Cordes of Eldridge, majoring in animal science/pre-vet, received the Senior Scholarship Award of Merit.

New chapter officers were installed. They are Curtis Youngs, animal science, president; Pamela White, food science and human nutrition, vice-president; and Steven Jungst, forestry, secretary-treasurer.

Gamma Sigma Delta encourages excellence in the practice of agricultural pursuits and high standards of scholarship in all branches of agricultural science and education.
