COOPERATIVE CONFERENCE PUBLICATION NOW AVAILABLE

AMES, Iowa -- With the face of agriculture changing dramatically, farmer cooperatives must change with the times to remain viable in the 21st century.

That was the focus of "Farmer Cooperatives in the 21st Century," an Iowa State University conference in June 1999. Conference proceedings have been published in a 150-page book.

"We brought together a mix of academics and cooperative leaders to address both the day-to-day issues and the longer-term barriers to effective cooperation," said Paul Lasley, sociology, who coordinated the conference with C. Phillip Baumel, economics. "We felt such a mixture of interests would provide a range of expertise and insights crucial to addressing the broader issues of the restructuring in agriculture."

The conference was funded by the USDA Rural Business Cooperative Services and featured 30 speakers from around the United States and Canada.

Single copies of the publication cost $10. Videotapes of the conference also are available. Single session tapes are $10 and a complete set of 12 tapes is $60. Make checks payable to Iowa State University and send requests to C. Phillip Baumel, 460 Heady Hall, ISU, Ames, Iowa 50011-1070. Or call (515) 294-7318.
