'NEWSMAKER' HONOR: ISU PROJECT REPELS ROACHES, BUT NOT REPORTERS

AMES, Iowa -- The American Chemical Society recently honored two Iowa State University researchers with its "Newsmaker" award for their contributions in communicating chemistry to the public.

ISU's Joel Coats and Christopher Peterson were cited for their efforts in communicating the results of their research on using compounds extracted from catnip to repel cockroaches. In presenting the award, the society said the ISU project generated media coverage that reached a potential audience of more than 17 million people.

Coats is a professor and chair of ISU's Department of Entomology. Peterson is a graduate student from Marshalltown.

The award was presented on Aug. 22 at the 220th national meeting of the American Chemical Society in Washington, D.C.
