ISU BLOCK & BRIDLE TO HOLD YOUTH LIVESTOCK JUDGING CONTEST
AMES, Iowa -- Young people interested in livestock judging can test their skills at the 18th annual Junior Livestock Evaluation Contest. The contest will be held at Iowa State University campus on Oct. 7.
The event, sponsored by ISU 's Block & Bridle club, provides youth from third-grade to 12th-grade a chance to practice and improve their livestock judging abilities. Approximately 100 students are expected to attend. Participants will be placed in divisions according to their experience.
The day will include workshops tailored for each division, on mechanics, performance records, reasons, criteria for judging different species and market evaluation. The ISU teaching farms will provide swine, cattle and sheep to judge. The officials are ISU students who are members of the ISU 2000 livestock judging team.
Registration forms are available at county extension offices, from vocational agriculture teachers or by contacting Stephanie Danner, (515) 232-6952. The entry fee is $5 and includes lunch, workshops and awards. Registration will be available the day of the contest, but pre-registration is encouraged by Sept. 22.
