RETIRED EXTENSION MEAT SPECIALIST CHAIRS CONFERENCE FOR SECOND TIME

AMES, Iowa -- Robert Rust, a retired extension meat specialist, served for the second time as chairman at the Meat Industry Research Conference in Philadelphia Sept. 16 and 17.

"This is the first time in the 33-year history of the conference that the same person was asked to chair the conference twice," Rust said. "I chaired the conference in 1979 and now again this year."

Rust retired from Iowa State University in 1994. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from East Michigan State-Lansing and his doctorate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Prior to coming to ISU, Rust worked as an extension meat specialist at East Michigan State.

Rust developed ISU's meat processing short courses 20 years ago. Today he provides consulting services for the meat processing industry and is involved in ISU's short courses.

The Meat Industry Research Conference is sponsored jointly by the American Meat Institute Foundation, the American Meat Science Association, the Canadian Meat Council and the Canadian Meat Science Association. Topics in microbiological safety and processing innovations, including current regulatory issues were covered at the conference. More than 140 scientists from industry, academia and other regulatory agencies attended.
