ISU WEB SITE WILL HELP QUENCH IOWANS' INTEREST IN WATER
AMES -- Where does water come from, and where does it go? Now anyone with a computer and an Internet connection can find out via free software available from the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture's World Wide Web site.
The water cycle is depicted in an educational software package originally created for the Iowa State University College of Agriculture's exhibit at the 1997 Iowa State Fair. Formation of rain clouds, water flow and groundwater resources are all represented in the software. By making the downloadable PC and Macintosh versions of the program available via the Web, the Leopold Center hopes the software will be used widely by Iowa educators, conservationists and other interested people.
Interest about Iowa water resources continues to ripple from educational materials prepared for the College of Agriculture's exhibit, which was part of a year-long, statewide 10th anniversary celebration of the 1987 Iowa Groundwater Protection Act. In addition to the software, many Iowans requested a poster-size topographical map of Iowa's rivers, which debuted at the state fair as a six-foot-by-nine-foot panel.
The "Iowa . . . Many Rivers Run Through It" map is now available for $4 from county ISU Extension offices or Extension's Publication Distribution Center, 119 Printing and Publications Building, Iowa State University, Ames, IA 50011, phone (515) 294-5247.
