COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE NAMES NEW ASSOCIATE DEAN

AMES -- A long-time extension agronomist will be the new associate dean for extension and industry programs in Iowa State University's College of Agriculture. Gerald A. Miller will assume his new responsibilities on May 1.

Miller's responsibilities will include coordinating the college's extension programs and working with agricultural businesses and commodity organizations in the state, according to David Topel, dean of the College of Agriculture.

"Dr. Miller brings outstanding extension experience to our administrative team," Topel said. He noted that Miller will work closely with Wendy Wintersteen, who is responsible for agricultural extension activities at the county level.

Wintersteen said she was "looking forward to working with Dr. Miller to maintain a strong field and campus relationship and increase the impact of our educational programs throughout the state."

Miller earned his Ph.D. in soil science at Iowa State in 1974. He has served as an extension agronomist for 24 years. He was responsible for soil survey and land use programs and has, for more than a decade, directed on-farm environmental education and demonstration projects.

"From my perspective, Dr. Miller is ideal for this position. He has a great knowledge of the state and a sense for the kinds of contributions that will help our citizens," said Stan Johnson, vice provost for extension.

Miller said this new position in the college would provide opportunities to integrate program planning and delivery across many disciplines. "I look forward to representing the college in building project teams and coordinating interdisciplinary programs with university extension leadership," he said.
