LOYNACHAN NAMED INTERIM HEAD OF AGRONOMY DEPARTMENT
AMES, Iowa -- Tom Loynachan has been named the interim head of the Department of Agronomy. He began his new duties on Aug. 24.
Department head Ron Cantrell is leaving the university to serve a five-year appointment as director general of the International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines. Cantrell led the department for eight years.
Loynachan has been a faculty member in ISU's agronomy department for 20 years. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from ISU, and his doctorate from North Carolina State University. Prior to coming to ISU in 1978, he was a faculty member at the University of Alaska. He teaches courses in soil fertility, soil biology and soil microbiology and biochemistry, and conducts research on organismal ecology in soil, including establishment, persistence and environmental interactions of introduced organisms.
He has received more than 15 awards and honors for his teaching and research, including ISU's Cardinal Key and Alumni Association Faculty Citation.
