FALL FIELD DAYS SET FOR AUGUST AND SEPTEMBER

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University Research and Demonstration Farms are offering 10 fall field days starting in late August.

Crop and soybean management, new technologies in precision agriculture and hoop building swine research are some of the crop and livestock production topics that will be highlighted during the field days.

All field days take place rain or shine and are free and open to the public. Most of the field days will include wagon ride tours to various sites on each farm. The field days and program topics are:

Aug. 25: Northeast Research and Demonstration Farm (1 mile south of Nashua on Highway 218 and west 1 1/2 miles on 290th Street), 1:30 p.m.
Program topics: precision agriculture including what has been learned from recent research, fertilization application and new technologies.

Aug. 26: Northwest Research and Demonstration Farm (2 1/2 miles east and 1 mile north of Doon), 9 a.m. Coffee will be served.
Program topics: multiple family farms and the impact of technology, corn genetics, corn rootworm management and other insect concerns, Roundup Ready corn trials and weather and cropping conditions.

Aug. 27: Neely-Kinyon Research and Demonstration Farm (2 miles south of Greenfield on Highway 25, 1 mile east and a half mile north), 4 p.m. Dinner will be served following the tours.
Program topics: Roundup Ready corn and soybean plots, corn-row spacing, oleic soybean studies, growing organic soybeans, soybean cyst nematode management and forage variety plots.

Sept. 1: Rhodes Research and Demonstration Farm (Highway 234 south to Highway 330 and southwest about 3 miles, then half a mile north on Binford Avenue in Marshall County), 1 p.m.
Program topics: hoop building research findings including environmental factors, bedding use, nutrient content and composting, animal behavior, ultrasound and lean gain analysis and daily management.

Sept. 1: Northeast Research and Demonstration Farm (1 mile south of Nashua on Highway 218, west 1 1/2 miles on 290th Street), 1:30 p.m.
Program topics: seasonal crop development, white mold in soybeans, no-till soybean production, advancements in alfalfa breeding and soil drainage and compaction.

Sept. 2: Southeast Research and Demonstration Farm (1 3/4 miles south and 2 miles east of Crawfordsville on the Washington/Louisa county-line road), 9:30 a.m. Lunch will be served.
Program topics: crop season review and farm activities, green-snap observations and yield potential, soybean cyst nematode, corn diseases and harvest management and manure as a fertilizer source.

Sept. 3: Armstrong Research and Demonstration Farm (11 miles southwest of Atlantic on Highway 6, 1/2 mile south and 3/4 mile east), 3:30 p.m. A meal will be served.
Program topics: Roundup Ready versus conventional soybeans, corn management trials, alfalfa quality and pest control, nitrogen management, crop modeling, soybean quality and compaction, soybean pH studies and GPS studies.

Sept. 10: Agronomy Farm (six miles west of Ames on U.S. Highway 30), 9 a.m. Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Program topics: corn and soybean breeding and genetic research, crop and pest management research, forage grass research, water quality research, environmental issues related to livestock production and a review of work on liquid manure application.

Sept. 16: Western Research and Demonstration Farm (4 miles east of Castana on County Road E-34), 1 p.m.
Program topics: establishment, usage and renovation of warm-season grasses, pasture grazing effects on feedlot performance, value-based marketing and the pros and cons of creep feeding calves.

Sept. 17: Southwest Swine Farm (two miles southwest of Atlantic on Highway 6), 1 p.m.
Program topics: farm tour and ceremony re-naming research farm to the Lauren Christian Swine Research and Demonstration Farm.

Programs are subject to change. Pre-registration is not necessary for any of the field days.
