CARVER LEGACY CELEBRATED AT ISU STATE FAIR EXHIBIT
AMES -- Visitors to the Iowa State Fair Aug. 13-23 can learn about George Washington Carver and how the Iowa State University College of Agriculture is carrying on Carver's legacy. Carver received two agriculture degrees from ISU before moving to Tuskegee University where he created many uses for peanuts, soybeans and sweet potatoes.
The theme of the exhibit is "Becoming the Best: The Legacy of George Washington Carver." Details of Carver's work in education, research and outreach will be matched with information on how the ISU College of Agriculture is continuing Carver's legacy in those three areas.
Visitors to the exhibit can create a souvenir of their visit by make rubbings of an etching of Carver. Daily prize drawings will be held. A lapel pin made from a Carver postage stamp will be awarded daily. The grand prize, to be chosen from daily winners, will be two tickets to see Bill Cosby on Aug. 30.
Because of Carver's work with peanuts, live peanut plants will be on display. Packets with peanut seeds and instructions on planting them will be handed out. There will be activity sheets about peanuts for children, and for adults, peanut recipes developed by Carver.
The ISU display is on the second floor of the Agriculture Building. It will be open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.
