NOTED INTERNATIONAL ANIMAL SCIENTIST DIES IN CALIFORNIA

AMES -- M.E. "Gene" Ensminger died July 5 in Clovis, Calif. He was 90.

In 1996, Iowa State University awarded Ensminger an honorary doctorate of humane letters to recognize his lifelong achievements in animal science, education and international agriculture.

For more than 30 years, Ensminger conducted international agricultural technology schools to improve livestock management practices. In recent years, he teamed with Iowa State officials to conduct schools in Russia, Ukraine and Cuba. Another school is planned in China this fall.

Also this fall, the ISU Department of Animal Science will dedicate the Ensminger International Room in the new addition to Kildee Hall and the Meats Laboratory. The meeting room will be an archive for many of Ensminger's papers, memorabilia and collected works of art.

"Every student and visitor who uses the room will have the chance to be inspired by the legacy of Dr. Ensminger and his wife Audrey, his partner in service to humanity," said David Topel, dean of the College of Agriculture.

Ensminger was professor and chairman of the animal science department at Washington State University for 21 years. He was the author of 22 books and more than 500 scientific articles. He presented lectures, seminars and schools in 70 countries.
