ISU FACULTY AND STAFF RECEIVE COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE AWARDS
AMES -- Iowa State University's College of Agriculture presented
annual faculty and staff awards at its spring-semester convocation.
Award winners were:
- Marshall Jurgens, professor of animal science, received the
College of Agriculture Outstanding Adviser Award. In his 29 years
as an adviser, Jurgens has worked with more than 1,200 students.
He has served several terms as adviser to the Block and Bridle
Club, one of the largest and most active student clubs on
campus.
- Russell Mullen, professor of agronomy, received the College of
Agriculture Outstanding Teacher Award. Since 1978, Mullen has used
computers, videos, greenhouses, problem-solving elements and other
innovative methods to teach the agronomy introductory course to
hundreds of students. He also teaches four other courses.
- A.E. (Gene) Freeman, distinguished professor of animal
science, received the College of Agriculture Outstanding
Achievement in Research Award. Freeman has been a faculty member
for more than 40 years. His research in dairy cattle genetics has
helped the dairy industry improve breeding methods, resulting in
more productive, healthier cows.
- Walter Fehr, distinguished professor of agronomy, and Earl
Hammond, professor of food science and human nutrition, received
the College of Agriculture Team Award. Ten years ago the two
scientists began to develop soybeans with reduced saturated fatty
acids. In 1997, the project culminated in the marketing of a new
low-saturated-fat soybean oil to consumers.
- Paul Brackelsberg, professor of animal science, received the
Excellence in International Agriculture Award. A faculty member
since 1966, Brackelsberg has been involved in programs in 25
countries. He has been instrumental in establishing educational
connections with several countries. In 1997, he led the first
delegation of ISU student interns to Thailand.
- Randall Petersohn, manager of the Meat Lab in the Department
of Animal Science, received the College of Agriculture
Professional & Scientific Award for Achievement and Service.
Petersohn, a staff member since 1976, manages an operation that
conducts many teaching, research and outreach activities with ISU
faculty and private companies.
- Barbara Malchow, secretary in the Department of Food Science
and Human Nutrition, received the College of Agriculture Merit
Award for Achievement and Service. Malchow, a staff member since
1990, manages the department's graduate admissions program, and
has developed World Wide Web resources to help recruit new
graduate students.
- Doug Buhler, professor of agronomy and USDA collaborator,
received the Raymond and Mary Baker Agronomic Excellence Award.
Buhler, a research agronomist at the USDA's National Soil Tilth
Laboratory, is a leader in weed biology research. He is
president-elect of the North Central Weed Science Society.
