AGRONOMY DAY '98 SCHEDULED SEPT. 10

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University's annual Agronomy Day '98 will be held Sept. 10 and will feature many agriculture research and outreach projects being conducted at ISU.

More than 50 research and demonstration projects on a wide range of projects will be highlighted at the event, held on the ISU Agronomy and Agricultural Engineering Research Center near Ames.

The field day is open to the public at no cost. It begins at 9 a.m. and continues until 3 p.m. Lunch will be served 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., by the Agronomy Club at a cost of $3.00.

There will be five walking and riding tours of research and demonstration plots. Each of the five tours will depart from designated areas throughout the day.

The first tour will highlight corn and soybean breeding and genetic research. Crop and pest management research will be featured in the second tour, and forage grass research will be the focus of the third tour.

Water quality research will be featured in the fourth tour. The fifth tour will be a visit to the Livestock and Environment Buildings Research Complex. At the farm there will be a discussion of housing and environmental issues relative to livestock production, along with a review of the work being done at ISU on liquid manure applications to fields.

Agronomy Day '98 also will feature about 30 posters describing additional research projects, exhibits of special equipment used by researchers, several commercial exhibits, a climatology display, and a George Washington Carver exhibit.

Information about the ISU College of Agriculture will be available for visiting students and teachers with faculty and staff present to answer questions. In addition, students can compete for prizes in an information scavenger hunt.

Agronomy Day '98 will be at the ISU Agronomy and Agricultural Engineering Research Center located six miles west of Ames on U.S. Highway 30.
