AFRICAN GRADUATE STUDENTS GATHER AT ISU TO TALK FOOD ISSUES
AMES -- African graduate students from 14 universities around the country will discuss food and development issues in their homeland at an Iowa State University gathering.
"This is an opportunity for the students to participate in a roundtable discussion of important African issues with leading experts in food security and agricultural development," said Stan Johnson, ISU's vice provost for extension, who will open the program at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 18.
The program is one of the activities linked to this week's announcement of the 1997 World Food Prize. ISU's College of Agriculture is secretariat for the prize, which is sponsored by Des Moines businessman John Ruan.
More than 30 graduate students, including several studying at ISU, will meet with officials from business, academia, development groups and the United Nations. The officials, who are all working on African programs, are participants in the World Food Prize Symposium on food security in sub-Saharan African on Friday, Oct. 17, in Des Moines.
Main topics of discussion will be private sector growth in sub-Saharan Africa, and the development of science and education for food and agriculture in the region.
