The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences is working in conjunction with the Iowa State University ADVANCE program and the national NSF ADVANCE program to enhance the recruitment, retention and advancement of women faculty in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields.

- CALS Alumni of Excellence Seminar Series

The first of four seminars in the College's "Alumni of Excellence" seminar series will be presented by Jeramie Strickland speaking on "Life as a Wildlife Biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service." Strickland received his master's degree in ecology and evolutionary biology at ISU in 2008 http:// www.career.ag.iastate.edu/young-alum/jeramie-t-strickland. The seminar series is supported by an ISU Women's and Diversity Committee grant to Sue Lamont, CALS Equity adviser, and Aurelio Curbelo, CALS Multicultural Liaison officer.

ADVANCE WORKSHOP: Importance of Mentoring Relationships

The focus of this Mentoring program is two-fold: (1) For mentors - how to prepare to be an effective mentor, (2) For mentees - how to use mentors in terms of your own professional development. This workshop will be presented by Donna Dean, Association of Women in Science past president and consultant, and Cynthia Simpson, Association of Women in Science director of Programs and External Relations. The workshop is supported by an ISU Women's and Diversity Committee grant.

The second of four seminars in the College's "Alumni of Excellence" seminar series will be presented by Dr. Charles Stewart (’00 Agricultural Biochemistry) of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in San Diego. Dr. Stewart was active in research as a summer intern and undergraduate student at ISU, and also served as the president of the national organization of Minorities in Agriculture and Natural Resource Related Sciences. He received his Ph.D. in Biology from Cornell University. Dr. Stewart will speak on his research about “The Emergence of Biphenyl Synthase: a structural journey from fatty acids to polyketides”. The seminar series is supported by an ISU Women's and Diversity Committee grant to Sue Lamont, CALS Equity adviser, and Aurelio Curbelo, CALS Multicultural Liaison officer. Dr. Stewart’s visit is jointly sponsored by a grant to the BBMB department and his presentation is part of the BBMB department seminar series.
